The Foster Family Initiative

The Foster Family Initiative (FFI) is a part of doing the right work the right way for children in care and the foster families that care for them.
The right work of the FFI is to get the right families to foster and stay fostering; and to ensure that each child, adolescent or sibling group that needs a family placement, has the right one. The right way is to engage communities by partnering with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in recruiting, preparing and supporting these families who care for the community’s own children.
The Foster Family Initiative is a new and innovative idea. It was developed through a partnership between DHR, The First Lady’s Children’s Cabinet and the Children and Youth Coordinating Council (CYCC). Because it is new and innovative, there are many unknowns. To answer some of those unknowns, two efforts are underway: a pilot using community-based organizations and EMBRACE, a statewide non-profit.
